by Cornelia Spoor, Roosevelt Public School Board of Education
The Roosevelt Board of Education is seeking community input as it begins development of a new strategic plan. The plan will guide the Board and the Chief School Administrator for the next five years.
The RPS Strategic Planning Process kicks off September 1, 2016, with a staff orientation, and will continue throughout the school year. It offers an exciting opportunity for community members to come together and collaboratively create and implement a renewed vision for Roosevelt Public School. The process includes revisiting our Mission Statement.
Step 1 – Community Orientation Workshop, October 6
The first step involving the community will be an Orientation Workshop at 7 pm on October 6th at RPS. The meeting will be chaired by Kathy Winecoff, New Jersey School Boards Association Field Service Representative for Monmouth County and the facilitator for the Roosevelt Strategic Planning Process. This meeting will provide an overview and detail of the year-long planning process. The group will form two committees:
Both committees will collect data on the strengths, challenges, and opportunities facing RPS.
Step 2 – Committees Meet, November 14
The committee members will meet on November 14 for training and assistance in this process.
Step 3 – Committees Present Findings, February 11 – 12
The Committees will present their findings at the Planning Council Conference scheduled for the weekend of February 11th-12th, 2017. This two-day event (Saturday evening, Sunday during the day) will allow for an in depth consideration of the committee findings.
Committee Members Wanted
If you have an interest in the history and traditions of Roosevelt Public School, these are the committees for you, and your input and energy will be greatly valued. You do not have to be a parent of an RPS student, or an alumnus of RPS to participate: stakeholders include teachers, parents, Choice parents, new residents, long time residents, and everyone interested in RPS. Anyone interested in participating should attend the Orientation Workshop on October 6th.
Board of Education Membership Update
At the August 8, 2016, meeting of the Board of Education, Assenka Oksiloff was sworn in to fill the seat vacated by Seth Ditchik through December 31, 2016. She is also on the November ballot to fill the final year of that term (1/1/17 - 12/31/17). Assenka was previously on the BOE for many years while her children were at RPS. She has just completed working in Princeton School District for the last 5 years, where her work on strategic plans and other school issues will be valuable to RPS BOE. Her sons attend Kreps and Hightstown High School.
In addition, there are three 3-year seats open on the November 2016 ballot. Judith Goetzmann and Jessica Hanley are on the ballot for these seats, and candidates can also be written in on the ballot in November. For more information, please contact Natalie Warner, Board President (rpsboe@gmail.com); or speak with any current Board member.
